Palm Springs Symphony Named Symphony-in-Residence at the Historic Plaza Theatre
Palm Springs, CA – (June 30, 2025) – A beloved landmark and a bold new cultural voice unite this December as the Palm Springs Symphony is proudly announced as the Symphony-in-Residence at The Plaza Theatre in downtown Palm Springs.
Founded in 2023 by music visionary Marilyn Benachowski, her son Roger Benachowski, and conductor and musical director Tom Hartley, the Palm Springs Symphony builds on a legacy of musical excellence. Marilyn and her late husband, Maestro Benachowski, co-founded The Desert Symphony, and now she brings that same passion and artistry to this exciting new chapter. After two seasons of acclaimed opera performances at the McCallum Theatre, the Symphony establishes its permanent home at The Plaza Theatre—an iconic venue that has hosted legends from Frank Sinatra to Bing Crosby—for a season full of spirit, elegance, and celebration.
"We are honored to be named the Symphony-in-Residence at the Plaza Theatre," said Marilyn Benachowski. "This storied stage is the perfect setting for our mission—to bring world-class music to the heart of Palm Springs while celebrating community, culture, and joy."

This season also marks a significant milestone for The Plaza Theatre, which reopens this December following a sweeping restoration led by the Oak View Group in partnership with the City of Palm Springs and the Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation. Originally opened in 1936, the Plaza has long been a jewel of the desert, hosting film premieres, radio broadcasts, and live performances that have defined the city's rich artistic legacy.
"Naming the Palm Springs Symphony as our Symphony-in-Residence represents exactly what this restoration is about—honoring our past while creating a vibrant, inclusive future for the arts in Palm Springs," said John Bolton, SVP Oakview Group and GM The Plaza Theatre. "Their presence establishes a cornerstone of classical excellence in our programming that perfectly complements our diverse artistic offerings."
With modern upgrades that respect its historic charm, including restored 1936 stenciling, improved accessibility, and new amenities for both audiences and artists, The Plaza Theatre is ready to shine once more—this time with the Palm Springs Symphony as its symphonic voice.
